In 1962 Tokyo, Tsutomu Kato and Tadashi Osanai founded Keio Gijutsu Kenkyujo Ltd., later renamed KORG, aiming to revolutionize rhythm machines. Yamaha acquired a controlling interest in 1987 but allowed KORG to remain independent. By 1993, KORG repurchased most of Yamaha's shares, continuing its legacy of groundbreaking music technology. The 1988 release of the M1 workstation, which sold over 250,000 units, cemented KORG’s legacy as a leading force in music technology.
