In 1962 Tokyo, Tsutomu Kato and Tadashi Osanai founded Keio Gijutsu Kenkyujo Ltd., later renamed KORG, aiming to revolutionize rhythm machines. Frustrated with existing technology, Osanai's desire for a better rhythm device led to the creation of the Donca Matic DA-20 in 1963. This success was followed by the DE-20 and eventually a programmable organ designed by engineer Fumio Mieda in 1967. KORG's innovation continued with the mini KORG synthesizer in 1973 and the M1 workstation in 1988, which became a top-seller. Yamaha acquired a controlling interest in 1987 but allowed KORG to remain independent. By 1993, KORG repurchased most of Yamaha's shares, continuing its legacy of groundbreaking music technology. The 1988 release of the M1 workstation, which sold over 250,000 units, cemented KORG’s legacy as a leading force in music technology.
